We humans dress thinner in summer, but cats can't take off their fur so easily. They cool their bodies mainly through evaporative cooling. In doing so, they wet their fur with saliva, which then evaporates and cools the house cats. To ensure that the heat does not become too unpleasant from 30 degrees Celsius, you should give your furry friend a little help and thus prevent heat stroke in cats in summer. For forest cat breeds and other long-haired furry noses, you should provide sufficient coolness and shade even at lower temperatures.
1. Provide plenty of fresh water
Like us humans, cats should drink plenty of fluids during the hot summer days. Make sure you always provide fresh water. In summer, water in the bowl quickly becomes unattractive for cats, as it tastes warm and stale and bacteria can multiply in it - several water changes a day can remedy this.
2. Provide a cool retreat
Your kitty should have the opportunity to retreat in high temperatures. If you have a basement, a cool basement room may be the first choice. Cold tiles, for example in the bathroom, are also often used to cool down. In general, you should make sure that the apartment does not heat up too much. For example, lower the shutters during the day so that the sun cannot heat up your rooms too much.
Attention: Fans and air conditioners can provide cooling, but are also a risk factor, as your salon lion could injure himself on the fan and catch a cold from the air conditioning. Tilted windows are also dangerous, as the kitty can get trapped there.
3. Fresh air, especially in the morning and evening
Ventilate your home well, especially in the morning and evening when it's not quite as hot yet. Make sure there is a lot of draught and fresh air so that it doesn't get too stuffy for your furry friend in your own four walls.
4. Feed small portions
Cats reduce their activity at high temperatures, like most other living beings, become sluggish and generally consume less energy. You should also adjust your diet accordingly. Feed several small portions throughout the day – this is more digestible. By the way: Be careful with wet food in summer – it spoils quickly in the heat and attracts flies. About 15 minutes before the next meal, take the bowl out again so that the food is not too cool – this keeps it fresh.
5. Damp towels
In extreme cases, damp towels or washcloths can be a blessing for cats and make the summer temperatures more bearable. Simply dampen a cloth with cold water and gently stroke your cat with it. Especially the stroking in the regions of the back and head is often gratefully accepted.
6. Water games in summer
Cats are not exactly known for particularly liking water. In midsummer, however, most velvet paws like to play with the cool water. Place an indoor fountain or alternatively a shallow water bowl in the apartment for your kitty to occupy herself with. If you also put a few table tennis balls or comparable objects in the water, it becomes a game that scores with cooling, activity and personal hygiene at the same time.
7. Brush cat fur
Cats lose a lot of fur in summer. To ensure that this does not become unpleasant for the house tiger, you should brush it regularly, especially at high temperatures. After all, less fur also means less heat. At the same time, you can examine the cat's fur for parasites.
